MATTHIAS KAUL: RELAX
with ENSEMBLE L’ART POUR L’ART
Kaul's composition based on Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” commissioned by the Bayerische Staatsoper depicts tension and relaxation processes – and is this not in fact a perfect description of metamorphosis?!? Tension is taken out of objects which then become transformed – whether it is a piece of cheese that becomes soft and loses its form, whether it is the same phenomenon observed in the ageing process of human beings or the gradual transformation over time of a mountain into boulders. According to Kaul, “Each sound is also produced through relaxation: a guitarist tenses a string and on its release a note sounds.” Individuals who have not yet discovered the classical beauty of the cold cuts shelf in their fridge are strongly advised to attend “Relax”, an evening packed with absurd beauty and relaxation.
