ERWIN STACHE: HOMELAND UTOPIA

A cuckoo-clock orchestra in the Grosser Garten! This is however an idyll with a double twist as you hear cuckoo calls where you least expect them. And beware: before you know it, you will have brought the cuckoo’s brood into the world instead of your own!

This year, the sound artist Erwin Stache focuses on the topics “homeland” and “utopia” in three installations for the Herrenhausen Gardens. The cuckoo orchestra which rebelliously and vociferously raises its voice against any form of feudal tradition forms one part of these installations. Stache is the magician and alchemist among the inventors of new sounds and musical instruments. He speaks affectionately of his inventions as if they were living creatures, but can just as easily break out into a fit of unexpected laughter.
The cuckoos are joined by “Hannover-Droschken“[Hanoverian carriages] which everybody is free to drive in, thereby transforming themselves into composers.
By coming into contact with the object “Herrenhäuser Kilo-Ohm”, visitors are additionally able to exert an influence on a magic flow of sound which as if emanating from a distant cloud also contains thought concepts once considered by Leibnitz on issues related to both homeland and utopia.
