KINDER TOTEN LIEDER – ALLE LUST WILL EWIGKEIT
with RICHARD VAN SCHOOR / KREAS / CAPRIFICUS.ORG
For the KunstFestSpiele 2010, capricifus.org (Thomas Goerge and Gerhard Schebler) created the extensive installation CAPRIFICUS in the Great Garden of Herrenhausen. This year, they will install a video sculpture originating from the artistic study of people from Burkina Faso juxtaposed with a study of Gustav Mahler’sKindertotenliederin the Herrenhausen Gallery. In a second step, the artistic space of the “Verwicklungshelfer” [approximate translation: “entanglement aid organisation”], as George and Schebler term themselves, will be colonised by the renowned director Christof Nel and Martina Jochem as the artistic team KREAS alongside the South African composer Richard van Schoor who will subsequently add live sound and action.
“Kindertotenlieder” is a spatial, tonal and theatrical experiment focused on one of the most ancient themes in art – the cultural approach to grief and loss, the human compulsion to hang on to the past and the possibility of letting go.
The provocative transplantation of Mahler into African culture which deals with loss in such a radically different way from our own culture forces us to look in on ourselves from the outside: a method which can help to break down cultural encrustation. This is a fascinating construction of overlapping images and associations in which space, documentary, theatre action and music mutually scrutinise and permeate each other.
