STEPHAN FROLEYKS: ALLE MENSCHEN WERDEN BRÜDER II
What has survived from the spirit of 1968, the utopia and the hope for a new world in the upheaval of the mass freedom and protest movements between 1960 and 1970?
In their concert performance, Stephan Froleyks and Claus van Bebber utilise the same concert material as played by Igor Levit and Frederic Rzewski the previous weekend: Beethoven’s “Hammerklavier Sonata“ and Rzewski’s “The People United Will Never Be Defeated“.
Five individuals use pure bow hair and soft brushes to hammer on, bow and stroke old pianos. This is accompanied by records playing ever-recurring fragments of sound: messengers from a grand but past era. A nostalgic evening: the individual who was feted in the figure of the Romantic pianistic “übermensch” disintegrates like the machine he formerly mastered.
